WHAT IS WINDOW CONDENSATION

Condensation on windows is the formation of water on a surface. When warm moist air comes into contact with a cooler surface, excess air moisture gathers on the surface. It’s like having a cold beverage on a hot day, quickly you will see water appear on the outside of the glass.

TYPES OF WINDOW CONDENSATION

Which type of condensation do I have?

Exterior condensation or dew, is visible on the outside surface of the window.  Just like like moring dew on the grass, it should disappear as the sun rises and temperature increases.

Interior condensation is visible moisture or frost on the interior surface of the window.

Condensation between window panes is a result of seal failure. This is commonly found in old windows and is a good sign they need to be replaced.

WINDOW CONDENSATION SOLUTIONS

If your concern is interior condensation, it has to do with the humidity levels in your home.

Some suggestions to reduce indoor condensation:

  • Leave window coverings open so that warm air can circulate across the window surface
  • Run exhaust fans when cooking or showering, and even a bit after your done
  • Try and obtain ideal indoor humidity levels

If your concern is exterior condensation, no need to worry.  The sun will take care of that on its own.

why didn’t this happen before?

Old windows most likely were allowing air to flow through the window vs. your new window which has a better air tight seal. Since that air can’t pass through your new window, you may see it condense on the surface.
